Western Digital Sucks Bawlz

So, my external HD that had every album cover i’d ever designed in my life on it and about 7 years worth of design work, died Summer Jam Sunday.

My heart pumps crude oil for Western Digital. I also lost about 38,000 mp3s.

Feel free to not talk to me for three weeks.

That’s why I holler at Seagate son!

That being said, I will hollerate at you with a possible solution via e-mail as soon as I get back to Salteattle.

dog, I have the 500GB joint and a couple weeks ago it decided it didn’t want to connect to either of my laptops anymore. I haven’t determined if it’s a complete wrap for it yet, but I don’t have high hopes. I didn’t have as much stuff on mine, but I feel your pain.

but yo, you should be able to get that data recovered for a price.

WD sucks balls.

I have a mac that’s on life support right now with all my design work and mp3s on it (freezes up after about 5 minutes) so I feel your pain…bring back cassette tapes, lol.

Shazbat! I have the same model, but I use it to back up my XP box. What do I use to backup the backup? Fuck it.

Macs freeze up?

DBDR: Why not share that solution? Any possible fuckry/chicanery involved?

Haha…I got that same joint about 2-3 wks ago to match another WD I have…to replace some off-brand joint I was using. All 500’s.

If these bitches crap out, it’s gonna be a motherfucker @ WD headquarters

Dude, I just copped the 750GB WD about a month ago from Best Buy. The first one “died” within a week and I exchanged it, so far the replacement is holding up but I’m shook now.

No chicanery/fuckery involved, but it does involve giving someone access to my home media server…so unfortunately I can’t share with the larger Rappers I Know fam.

open the External, and remove the Hard Drive, then plug Harddrive internally inside a desktop computer. Then if it still does not respond try running, “SpinRite.”

BTW, The skatedeck design is sick.

Maybe WD has some type of guarantee or offer a service to recover your data maybe?

I fcuks with internal drives and slap on an enclosure.

First of all, my condolences. I have the same exact WD external (purchased @ Best Buy during a great sale just like a couple other peeps in this post). The 320 GB joint. It’s been doin’ ok but this is scaring the shit out of me. Holla @ ur man Peter Rosenberg on what he did when his HD crashed. Talked about it on his show and everything.

I’ve heard that you can get one last use out of a dusted external if you stick it in the freezer overnight. Haven’t had to try it on mine yet.

Seems like everyone is having computer problems I’ve been a Mac loyalist for over half a decade and took pride that we could never get a virus. But I got a Macbook and the worst possible thing that could happen to an Apple: Kernel Panic attacks!

Stay in there dude

it’s sad when you need a back up to the back up… I lost about 16K mp3’s earlier this year.

My heart goes out to you.

Peace

f a western digital, they’re practically guaranteed to off themselves without warning.

lacie’s top dog, and seagate’s steppin it up. if you’re ever in the market, keep your eye out on dealighted.com. i caught a 750gb maxtor one-touch for 130 shipped from the dell site because of them. after a few hours, dell took it down and brought it back up to retail (170+shipping).

Sorry for your loss.

But really, the answer is not to just “get another” like I read many times above. Backing up a first fragile hard disk with (…wait for it…) another fragile hard disk is not wise if you are really worried about the integrity of your data. In companies where data is treated as mission-critical, they back up to removable media which isn’t directly tied to a drive motor or electronics which can fail. What you lose in immediate access, you more than make up for in long term guaranteed availability. Usually they use high-end tape libraries. The consumer level equivalent of this would be DVD-Rs. Basically, for all the old finished stuff you’ll never need to reach for immediately, archive them to a stack of DVDs and stick em on a shelf so that you will only ever lose your current works in progress due to a disk failure. And of course, you should be doing backups of the current stuff too.

FYI to k. above… Lacie is not a hard disk manufacturer, which is the real determining factor in quality/longevity. They just make the enclosures. Lacie uses Maxtor disks internally… I’m not a fan. They have the 2nd highest failure rate in my experience(older IBM/Hitachi drives were the worst). Seagate is my choice.

That is Bawlz!!!

I got a 250 GIG that’s doing OK right now, but it IS a WD portable. I hope there is no bad press on the portable models!!!

I got mad beats and designs on there, business contacts, Resumes, Mixes, accapellas, plugins, brushes from photoshop, patterns, shapes, custom brushes, all kinds of creative stuff that i need to have there, so i won’t sardine crowd my laptop’s HD!

I wish you the best main!!! you got a sick ass site, check the new site and BLOG from me as well!!
