Flash Gordon Parks - Mr Wonderful

The second in a series of podcasts commemorating the contributions that Marvin Gaye and Stevie made to the world of music. Today we present a mix from HISD / Peace Uv Mine documentarian Flash Gordon Parks, honoring the continuing legacy of Stevie Wonder. Words from Flash after the jump.

Comparing two of the most influential, groundbreaking artists of all time is very difficult……but my crew and I use it as an exercise to stay sharp on our musical knowledge. So while the debates continued I wanted it to be clear that I wasn’t anti Marvin by no means but if I had to choose out of the two I would elect Stevie for Prez. Stevie Wonder (child prodigy, multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter)  work embodies not only an era but a stream of consciousness that keeps u connected to the people, the community, and the culture. While Marvin broke boundaries with “What’s Going On” regarding socio-political content Stevie took it further with songs like “Big Brother” , “Living For The City” and “Village Ghetto Land.” Mr. Wonder(ful)’s music became the soundtrack to life as he touched on various topics other than love and his appreciation for the opposite sex……..The beautiful melodies, the intricate compositions, and the masterful way Stevie paints emotions with one broad stroke simply captivates you and keeps you eager to hear more…..

During the 70s Stevie redefined the sound of pop music using tools such as the clavinet and other synthesizers. He also introduced the “talk box” on his Music Of My Mind album which inspired such artists like Roger Troutman, Teddy Riley, and many other autotune/vocoder enthusiast. Since this isn’t about winners and losers I won’t bore u w/ Stats and Accolades……but merely present some of my favorite songs that exemplify the Genius of Steveland Morris aka Mr. Wonderful
