Get To Know DJ Cozmos (of King Coz) & Coz Uncut

DJ Cozmos is genuinely one of the most talented, creative, hard-working and funniest people that I have ever known. And a damned good barber.

I was introduced to DJ Cozmos through a mutual friend named Matt Sonzala back in 1993 (damn, that was a long time ago). Matt told us (K-OTIX) that he was kind of promoting a group called Seedz of Soul, who reminded him of us. We met at a hole in the wall club named Goat’s Head Soup. They were just getting on stage when we walked in. Standing at the back of the stage behind a set of turntables was the centerpiece of the trio, DJ Cozmos.

Their show was amazing. Afterwards, we all chopped it up for hours. A few days later, we were already in the studio, recording the first of countless collaborations with Coz:

He’s one of the absolute best at chopping samples. There’s maybe 3 other people on the planet that i’ve seen who can even come close. That’s why he’s remained an integral part of the camp. I have hundreds of beats that i’ve “acquired” from him throughout years. I don’t even have to write to them. I just like to listen. We’ve worked on a lot of projects together, and he’s DJ’ed quite a few shows for us as well. Yes – he’s a DJ. And a writer, lyricist, tagger, producer, licensed barber, culinary enthusiast, and whatever else he decides to be.

Recently, he’s teamed up with King Midas to form the production team of King Coz. I was fortunate to sit with them and bear witness to their methods first hand. Without trying to sound too biased, they’re going to change the landscape of how good music should sound. Mark my words.

That’s the best sounding copy of that song I’ve heard. This song still sounds good over 15 years later (and yes, realizing that this was done the year I graduated high school makes me feel a little older).

I’m dumb – you meant the Seedz of Chaos song:

1. Coz
2. Big Mon
3. Kwam
4. Damien
5. Ano

Recorded at New Style Records Studios aka Doug King’s apartment (he co-produced “Mind Playing tricks On Me”). We recorded the track on an 8-track 1/2 inch reel (which I still have). The booth / closet that we recorded the vocals in had a red light bulb in it, which made it nearly impossible to read the vocals. If you listen closely throughout the track (especially at the end), you can hear the ambient noise of conversation bleeding into the track.

The track unexpectedly cuts off at the end, which is why you hear Coz go “HEYYYYY”. And them him and Big Mon laugh because they thought the track got cut off. Since the delay effect had to be punched in manually, Ano’s “Me….me….me…” at the end came out differently than expected.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

I think Kwam is a teacher now. At one point, he started playing guitar and created a spinoff band, Freedom Sold. Ano was a BEAST on the mic. Not sure where he is….

If Coz is willing, I may post some classic Seedz Of Soul tracks
