Lupe’s Midnight Marauder Fiasco

This Knucklehead Lupe said:
“I respect hip-hop and i dont know one word of Midnight Marauders and truthfully dont have the interest to go and find out…”

Ol’ bum ass nigga.

The homie Miss Info talked to Q-Tip and he said this:

“I’m not trying to make this any bigger than it is. But, I just want to clear up one thing….

We never hunted him down and begged him to be a part of the show or anything like that. His name was pitched to us by VH1, and we said, ok cool. The only time I spoke to Lupe about the Hip Hop honors performance was on a conference call, which we did with the others artists too, like Busta and Common, to plan the performance.

When VH1 brought his name up, based on what he had said about us before, I thought it was ironic and it kind of humored me. All that stuff he said about never listening to a Tribe album before and having no interest in doing so, it doesn’t make sense to me.

As I said on the show itself, it was listening to NWA’s “Straight Outta Compton” that inspired us to make “Low-End Theory,” and years later, I spoke to Dr. Dre and he told me that hearing “Low-End Theory,” inspired him to make “The Chronic.” That’s what music does. That’s what artists do, they seek out information, of all kinds.

But no, I never hunted him down to be part of the tribute. That didn’t happen.”

Lupe Lost.

some real ignorant shit right there! i thought u would be better than that lupe. Cuz if u aint up to learn from hip hop how the hell u gonna luv it? I know u luv the paper and fame you get off it! Maybe that’s all u luv?

Your short-sighted ass probably don’t realize that if it wasn’t for atcq, native tongues, and the pro-black rap of the late 80’s the world might not wanna hear a word from your muslim, conscious, alternative, (insert any other label used to describe lupe that has been used to describe native tongue fam) ass! Wake up Fam!

peace

Yeah! that was an ignorant ass statement. I mean, what was the point of saying some stupid ish like that. Who was he trying to impress. If he had listened to ATCQ - MM. Maybe that could have been the difference in his album being Classic Material instead of just O.K.!.

It’s alright, Lupe. Don’t bother with the classics. Just keep skatain’ and wearing those bright-ass shoes. Hopefully you’ll end up doing a faceplant in a skating-outtake video.

Hey Stuuuu–pid Luupe. You should be honored to be asked to perform a track from the great ATCQ.

You corny STUPIDSTAR song is wack.. The COOL is going to sell alittle more than wood.
You will never be a great MC, if you cant memorize a few bars from a classic tribe track.

You can kick, then push ur way out of the industry Stuuu-pid luuupe. Your Done!!
ATCQ are legends you should respect that. Big ups the real chicago artists (Kanye and Common).

I wonder what was the context of this statement. Considering the affect tribe had on the industry and hip-hop as an art form I wonder what could have prompted Lupe to say this statement. While it could be bravado (something along the lines of saying he doesn’t look back but creates his own inspiration) I think this may be out of context in some regards. It really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense….

Atleast he doesn’t sound like every other cat thats been heavily influenced by atcq.

Oct 8, 2007 19:30

anyone know the whole story behind this? l

let me break it down.

VH1 asked Lupe to Perform on the Hip Hop Honors…

Lupe Says No….

Q-Tip ask Lupe to perform….

because tip reached out directly to him…he says yes…

i prolly would have told Vh1 to eat a d*ck too…

Vh1 gets the approved lyrics to lupe 1, maybe 2 days before the performance?

Not much time, whatever, i think he should have nailed it too…but we have to take the whole situation into accord before we throw Lupe under the bus for a few words…

Im sure we are are guilty of dropped one dumb…ignorant…bigoted…racist…whatever comment here and there, but that one error doesn’t define our character, especially in the case of Lupe

well consider, lupe admittedly was not a hip-hop fan. he said growing up he didnt listen to a lot of hip-hop. so its not a surprise he never heard ATCQ’s M.M. its not a surprise if he had no real influence in his rhyme. he’s on some other shit anyway

Oct 9, 2007 18:37

Yeah man on that note, i get from Lupe saying what he said, that great album’s can be still be produced without the so called influences of so called peer group’s, just like the Little Brother Lil Wayne talk going on, if i remember correctly Big Pooh mentioned not long after The Listening droped that Tha Carter was one of his favorite albums to have droped that year, which is a classic but not mabey to those that only listen to what they or peer’s do, i thought HipHop culture was about being yourself in the first place?

Midnight Marauders is truly one of Hip-Hop’s greatest sonic achievements. If you know hip-hop there is no way you could disrespect it on any level…that album was a 5 mic certified classic….brilliant…i hope Lupe can clear this up for me…i’d hate to think i couldn’t fuck wit’ him cuz he’d become an egotistical p***y.

hihi
Oct 10, 2007 4:11

lupe on change:

“before we go further we gotta take em back / so we could know what we did / cause if we never know what happened in the past / than we can never know just what it is” or sth like that

anyway, he’s still top 3 at the moment, no doubt

When I watched the show, this is the first thing that came to mind.Of ALL people… why pick the one guy that admitted to not having owned or even had an interest in owning a copy of Midnight Marauders? He butchered the lyrics! MF got me feeling all elitist / KRS ONE now.

Plain ignorance.

Its one thing to have never heard “Midnight”, which is damn near sacrilege to begin with, but I could deal with it.
I could even accept, “I’ve heard it, but didn’t like it”…but to say he has no interest in hearing it?? Nigga, if it wasnt for “Midnight”, YOUR album wouldn’t sound the way IT does. And “Food and Liquor” was good, but not great by any means.

Plain ignorance.

I’m completely shocked. If he did say this then the only thing I can say is shame on him. I don’t know why he would say something so utterly STUPID. I’m a big fan of his, Food & Liquor is a masterpiece, but I’m going to think of him in a whole new light if this is actually what he said. He’s a youngin’ who would not even be in the mind of hip hop fans had it not been for ATCQ and what they did before he could even stand up and walk. This is exactly the type of disrespect that pisses me off. How dare he? He claims his guilty pleasure was listening to Too Short, why not Tribe? It wouldn’t have been a guilty pleasure had he listened. Not only should he listen, study and emmulate Midnight Maruders, he need to do likewise with Low End Theory, Beats, Rhymes and Life, and everything else they put out. Big Dummy!! Fans are fickle, he won’t get the same kind of success Food & Liquor got with his new one. The release date was
already pushed back to December.

We all need to calm down. I like ATCQ and Lupe and just because he didnt listen to an album doesnt make him less of an mc. all you that say he’s ignorant probably are missing in listening to a couple of classic albums yourself’s, we are all guilty of it. the way his statement is written sounds real bad but maybe it’s not what he ment i mean shit we weren’t inside his head. he had a great debut album that’s why he was nominated for 3 grammy’s while rapping about something different ( LIKE ATCQ) so please dont judge you’re not jesus

Fuck y’all man… check your shit before you start saying all this off the wall shit… Cuz for real I never really liked pac so does that mean just cuz a lot of niggas do I’m wrong for not thinking that… Fuck all these message boards… I’ve lost respect for all of you

First, I don’t care what anyone says (and I’m not being sensitive about the situation), he was disrespectful. Point blank period. No one said he needed to kizz Tribe’s azz, but hey, if you have so much respect for Q-Tip and what Tribe did, then at least give them enough respect to learn the words. Plus, he wasn’t given the lyrics 2 days in advance, he had the info a couple of months before the show was taped. It wasn’t like he had to perform the song in its entirety. If he didn’t listen to Tribe and wasn’t interested he should have said NO. Trust me, there would have been 50 more people lined up to do it (and without fuckin’ up the lines). They should have gotten De La Soul to do it anyway if you ask me. If Nick Cannon can do a tribute to Whodini and he probably was like 2 or 3 when they were hot, then Lupe has NO excuse. You didn’t grow up listening to hip hop, OK I can buy that. However, once you did get into it you listened to 8Ball & MJG. Please!!! Common listened to Tribe and other east coast rappers and so did Kanye. Don’t make excuses for him people, he’s a little shit that need to learn how to respect his elders. No one said anyone had a monopoly on what is real hip hop and who should like who. However, keep your comments to yourself. If that’s the way he felt he should have kept his azz off the stage, bouncing around looking like a chicken head hyped up on crack. Since he loves 8Ball and MJG so much why don’t he suck their wangs. Punk azz ni***!!! He lost all respect with me. I’m not purchasing the Cool and Food & Liquor has gone by by.

The brother shouldn’t accept the job unless he purposely wanted to show how much he could’ve cared less of honoring ATCQ.

A while back, I heard something to the fact that he’s considering leaving music alone because it’s causing conflict between him & his beliefs (Islam). i thought this whole shit with him was a very good start if it’s the case.
