I wonder what was the context of this statement. Considering the affect tribe had on the industry and hip-hop as an art form I wonder what could have prompted Lupe to say this statement. While it could be bravado (something along the lines of saying he doesn’t look back but creates his own inspiration) I think this may be out of context in some regards.
